Pottery Class is Such Fun!

Well it has been a few weeks since I last posted and I thought I would update this blog as to my progress with my pottery classes. I have had a total of 5 classes now, every one of them have been fun. So far I have shaped several different pieces, some of which have been fired once but I have not waxed and glazed any yet. I missed the class they did that :-(

Anyway, you may be wondering what kind of pieces I have done since I am truly an newbie to the the pottery field. Let me start out by saying that I am in a class that is actually for advanced students but the instructor also teaches newbies and allowed me to attend this class. Her name is Candi and she is great. We started out making an open fruit/bread bowl out of coils, then we made a rectangular vase out of slabs. The next week (week 3 for me) we got to work with porcelain clay and made a couple of pinch pots, that same night I got to make a purse out of my rae's white clay that I have been working with. The fourth class we used a slump mold and a hump mold to make a dish and a bowl. I missed the next class where they glazed some things. But last night's class we made a garden sculpture. The sculpture while challenging and I enjoyed the process, I'm not sure I'm crazy about the end product. As soon as I get something completely finished, I will post a picture.

I had homework after my first class to create a signature stamp and some design stamps. That was challenging and fun and I am pleased at how my signature stamps came out. I made them with my initials and a palm tree. I have homework again this week because my hump and slump molded projects need to be cleaned up a little (take the rough spots off) before they get too hard. Next week is Memorial Day and we will not have class again until June 2nd. She is having a glaze making class on Saturday but I will miss it due to other obligations.

Now this blog is up to date, let's see if I can keep it that way.

Join me in loving pottery!

Hello and welcome to my Loving Pottery blog. My sister recently moved to China and came back for a visit. She came bearing gifts. One of the things she brought were teapots. Each one was different and she had each one wrapped in Chinese newspaper. She put them all on the table at our parent's house and we each got to choose one. It was great fun seeing all the different designs and how beautiful they all were. Something sparked inside me and being in this mode of tackling creative challenges, I decided I needed to make one myself.

Please realize that I know nothing about pottery, except that I like it. That was just a few weeks ago and since then I have recently have begun taking pottery lessons with the hopes of one day creating that functional and beautiful teapot.

I had my first class yesterday and throughly enjoyed it. We started with a small bowl created from clay coils. When I finished mine, it didn't look too bad. Certainly not perfect but not too bad either. It will be a couple of weeks before it will be completly finished and after it is fired will be the true test of how well I did on my first project. But I am one step closer to making that teapot! I will update after my next class.

In the meantime, if you would like to share pictures of your pottery pieces, or pottery stories, please feel free to leave comments. I must admit I am new to this blogging thing and trying to figure it all out. I will have to find out how to allow you to add your pictures. Please bear with me.
